چکیده

Daily distributions of eclosion and mating activities of Pseudopidorus fasciata Walker (Lepidoptera: Zygaenidae) were recorded under natural and various laboratory conditions. Eclosion of this insect exhibited circadian gating in constant darkness (DD) but not in constant light (LL) at 28°C. Under natural conditions, the majority of adults emerged in midmorning with an eclosion peak around 1000 hours. The eclosion distribution was significantly affected by ambient temperature but not by photoperiod under laboratory conditions. Eclosion was more spread out at 22°C than at higher temperatures, and peak eclosion times were advanced at higher temperatures up to 30°C. Under natural and laboratory diurnal cycles, adults of P. fasciata preferred to mate at dusk, within a few hours before the start of the scotophase. Photoperiod and ambient temperature interacted in regulating the mating distribution in P. fasciata. Mating rhythmicity disappeared under DD and LL, under which the insect either mated arrhythmically (DD) or barely mated (LL). Overall, eclosion rhythm in this insect was predominantly regulated by temperature rather than photoperiod, whereas photoperiod appeared to be more influential than temperature in rhythmic gate of mating patterns.

Adult Behavior of Tirumala limniace (Lepidoptera: Danaidae)

Tirumala limniace Cramer as an ornamental butterfly is utilized in butterfly garden, in this article we study their adult activities include flight, foraging, courtship, mating, and oviposition. We found that males spent 22.1% of its time flying, 14.1% foraging, 63.8% in courtship and mating. And females spent 30.8% of its time flying, 10.1% foraging, 57.1% in courtship and mating, and 2% ovipo...

Effect of Natural and Artificial Photoperiods and Fluctuating Temperature on Age of First Mating and Mating Frequency in the Navel Orangeworm, Amyelois transitella

The effect of weak illumination during part or all of the scotophase on mating frequency of navel orangeworm, Amyelois transitella (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), was examined in environmental chambers under long photoperiods and constant warm temperature (colony conditions) or shorter photoperiods and a cooler thermoperiod intended to mimic spring conditions in our region. These data were c...

Circadian window of opportunity: what have we learned from insects?

Diurnal rhythms in plants and animals have been observed for centuries, but their endogenous and circadian nature were not acknowledged until the 1960s (Menaker, 1969). Research during that decade provided ample evidence for an internal ‘clock’ generating daily rhythms in behavior through biochemistry; however, the nature and anatomical location of this clock were a mystery. Insects helped to u...
